A letter from Matt Nelligan, National Pro-Life Chair
November 26, 2008
Office of the National Pro Life Chair
Dear Brothers,
On April 18th, 2007, following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act, prominent Pro-Abortion legislators proposed the “Freedom of Choice Act”. This legislation would effectively eliminate any restriction on abortion passed at the Federal or State level. In July of 2007, then U.S. Senator and now President-Elect Barack Obama pledged to Planned Parenthood that “The first thing I would do as President of the United States is sign the Freedom of Choice Act.”
Now is the time for us to organize and voice our opposition to this bill, so that we can effectively influence legislators to defeat it when the next Congress convenes in January, so that the President-Elect will not have a chance to keep his promise. Over the past several years the Pro-Life movement has made significant progress in our efforts to eliminate the intrinsic evil that is abortion. In addition to the successful passage of the ban on partial birth abortions, Congress also recognized the fundamental truth that life begins at conception by passing the Unborn Victims of Violence Act in 2004. This bill allowed a double charge of homicide when a pregnant woman was murdered, inherently recognizing the rights of the child.
As we move into a new Congressional term and as a nation, observe the inauguration of a new President, we must also do all in our power to make sure that the significant progress that has been made in terms of the protection of the innocent unborn is not undone. As such I urge you to sign the petition to defeat the so called “Freedom of Choice Act” and to encourage all other Hibernians to do the same. Our responsibility as Catholics to defend life and to do all we can to influence public policy in this direction is at least as important if not more so, than any of our other political action endeavors. If you have any questions about this particular legislation or would like to get more involved in this effort, please feel free to contact me.
Yours in our motto,
Matt Nelligan
