Hibernian Leaders Appeal to President Bush for Malachy McAllister

Quincy, MA & Albany, NY  The men’s and ladies  National President’s of the nation’s oldest Irish-Catholic group,  released today a letter  sent to President Bush on behalf of Malachy McAllister, an Irishman under threat of deportation at anytime.  Jack Meehan of Quincy, Ma  and Dorothy Weldon acknowledged with gratitude the legal and legislative initiatives of many including Senator Charles Schumer, Members of Congress especially  Steve Rothman, Pat Lynch of the NYC PBA and the support INA, the IAUC and the Smith, Dornan & Dehn  law firm.

“But let’s face it” stated Meehan, “now is the time for those  who believe in the promise of America to act.    The President alone or acting in concert with Congress can demonstrate what  the Irish peace accord is supposed to mean,  deliver justice to   Malachy and end his families ’s nightmare.”

“The Attorney General and Homeland Security have spent millions to legally lynch this lone Irishman,” continued the Hibernian leader, “in a pointless exercise that could not possibly contribute one iota to national security.”

Concluded  President  Weldon:   “We  appeal  to   President Bush, whose concern for   government excess is well known,  and  to his sense of what America must mean to those who have fled Afghanistan, Iraq and Burma.  Malachy is just as entitled  to asylum or relief from deportation as those who fled those conflicts and government persecution.  Indeed he has spent the last 20 years proving how worthy he is of a home in America.”

Meehan Urges Renewal

of Hibernian Mission

JMeehan

Quincy, MA 7 Albany, NY  Jack Meehan, a Brighton native, who has been at the helm of every major enterprise of the Hibernians over the past 30 years, has chartered a new course for the 173 year old group.  His remarks were delivered at the National President’s Testimonial Dinner* at he Martin Center at  Stonehill College in N. Easton, MA.

Meehan reviewed the long tradition of the AOH support of Irish freedom.  “This is a history of which we are justifiably proud.  As long as there are Hibernians we will demand truth and accountability by the British for their killings of Pat Finucane, Rosemary Nelson and the 33 victims of the Dublin-Monaghan bombings, the deadliest of the entire conflict,.”  He continued:  “But the war is over, the prisoners are freed and Nationalists  now have a say in governance and can demand justice with the ballot box. We, on the other hand,  will never stop demanding an end to the partition wall.”

The President gave examples of a new agenda for the Order for  which  more resources will  be dedicated.  “Our support of Irish men and women studying to serve our church will grow.  We will help Irish missionaries around the world that live and work  under death threats.  We can expand our efforts to combat the barbarism of abortion and to  fight hunger as no other ethnic organization has.  Those Hibernian families affected by disasters, or have a member who  is  a wounded warrior or  who  struggles  for citizenship must receive our wholehearted support.”

“We are at a crossroads,” Meehan concluded. “and it is our obligation to re-invent what it means  to be a Hibernian today  so that another generation can add to our  legacy tomorrow.”

Hibernians to Expand

Pro-Life Agenda

Quincy, MA & Albany, NY  National Hibernian President Jack Meehan took the occasion of the Feast of the Holy Innocents, Martyrs (Dec. 28th) to propose an expansion of AOH  education and material assistance in efforts to protect and promote their pro life agenda. Stated the Brighton native:  “The core missions of the Hibernians remains---a free and united Ireland and support for the teachings of the Catholic Church---but the 10th anniversary of the Belfast Agreement has given not only Irish Nationalists, but also, the AOH a peace dividend.  Now, more than ever, we can concentrate on expanding our charitable efforts in areas of great need.”

In a letter released to the leaders of over 300 Divisions and all members, Meehan recalled the words of Pope John Paul II in his 1979 visit to Ireland in which he urged Hibernians to support projects that were first fostered by our Brother Hibernian and JFK Memorial Medal recipient  John Cardinal O’Connor.  “The practical and material support for Birthright and Pregnancy Centers must now be supplemented by support, in both word and deed, for the Priests for Life and Sisters for Life in their dedication and compassion for the unborn.”

“In all we do,” concluded Meehan, “we, like past generations, draw strength from prayers to St Patrick and St Brigid who inspired so many Irish to serve the poor, the defenseless, and the powerless. This legacy of compassion will now be given new luster by a highly focused Hibernian program in defense of the unborn.”

Hibernian Leader Condemns

Deportation of McAllister Kin

Quincy, MA  & Albany, NY…..The leader of the nation’s  oldest and largest Irish Catholic organization  has taken the  U.S. government  to task for the deportation of Jamie McAllister.  “It is apparent that having failed in their efforts to extradite Jamie’s father Malachy,” stated Jack Meehan of Quincy, MA, “the  U. S. government is  taking  its’  revenge.”  This action  is reprehensible, a mockery of  priorities and truly unjust.”

“Folly such as this has become all too common,” claimed Meehan, “with governments that have lost their sense of priorities.  They  take   comfort in one shallow publicity stunt after another while real problems and real solutions seem beyond their grasp.”

Concluded  President Meehan:  “I will be urging our members and their families to share their opinion of this latest outrage with their elected officials and the U.  S Department of Justice.  For far too long  the lives of some of our members have been ruined to satisfy the ego of small minded bureaucrats  and vindictive public officials who have lost all perspective of what it means to be a public servant.”

Meehan Pays Tribute to

IRA Prison Leader

Jack MKeehan

Quincy, MA  &  Albany, NY  February 19, 2008   The National President of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Jack Meehan of Quincy, Mass, released the following statement on the recent death of Brendan “The Dark” Hughes , an IRA commander who led prison protests in Long Kesh,              “The Irish Republican cause has lost one of its bravest soldiers who

dedicated his life to ending   British rule in Ireland.  He was a gentleman

and man of honor whose belief in the principles of the Irish struggle was so deeply felt he sacrificed his health for them.  Hibernians and lovers of freedom and justice across this nation owe a debt of gratitude to men like Brendan.  Generations to come in Ireland will reap the benefits of his courage and sacrifice on the  certain day when British rule ends in the six counties.

To Brendan’s family and friends we say:  Go ndeana Dia trocaire air agus ar dheis De go raibh a anam go deo.”

National President Meehan releases letter to
President Bush

March 14th  Quincy, MA & Albany, NY   Jack Meehan, the National President of the nations largest Irish Catholic group, released a letter today he has sent to President Bush.  The letter acknowledges the reduction of violence and economic progress brought about in the North of Ireland as a result of the 1998 Belfast Agreement.  “But there is no mistaking the lack of progress” stated Meehan, “on the accord’s justice and truth provisions  ten years after its  signing.   The  British mockery of the ‘Good Friday’ treaty  obligations reflects on the credibility of the United States and sets us for up for ridicule around the world.  We have asked the President to insist England promptly report the  truth and facts of their 40 year criminal conspiracy in six counties of Ireland.”   Meehan  noted he would like to be the last National President of the AOH  to raise the issue of Britain’s ‘dirty war’ in Ireland “.. but our Order will not rest until every textbook depicts the truth about An Gorta Mor during 1845-1850 and the corrupt undemocratic occupation of the six counties erroneously referred to as Ulster.”
